SYTYCD

Just so you know I'm not totally uber depressed (even if we have no money, broken cars, death-trap of a race coming up), here are some fun pictures from SYTYCD. I love Erika's turtle face x10.

Anxiety

I have been having some major anxiety recently. See the hell prepared for me on Saturday:

Also, yesterday I came home from So You Think You Can Dance, and the cats were gone. I cried. They have been re-homed and you can make fun of me if you want, but it breaks my heart. And then I think, "How am I going to survive when Ally grows up and moves away?" and Matt said, "Well, we're not going to put her on craigslist."

Matt & Sarah and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Thursday started out as any other day, with the special perk that I had a hair appointment at 5:30 PM. I only get my hair done once every 3 months or so because it's so ridiculously expensive, but I have found the hairdresser of my lifetime and she is worth it. Best hair cut I have ever had. And the color blend! She's miraculous. I also had arranged with someone from Craig's List to pick up an ipod shuffle between 4 and 6, so I had a small window to get from Verona to the west side of Madison and then back to the east side. As I was driving the truck starts making weird noises. It sounds like maybe I'm driving on a flat tire, but the truck isn't veering or anything. I pull into the left turn lane so I can stop at a gas station and take a look and as soon as I brake at the light...DEAD. It won't turn over at all. Frustrating, but OK, except I'm on a tight schedule. I call my hero and he comes to my rescue, trades me vehicles and I do make it to get the shuffle (which is so amazingly light. What did I ever do before?!!?) but had to cancel my hair. Still, not the end of world, but I haven't gotten the news yet. The verdict from Meineke is that the motor is done...minimum $2600 for a used motor from a junkyard. Now I'm crying, thinking how we'll never get out of debt, how are we going to manage on one car, going through scenarios: Maybe I can ride my bike to work. It's only 10 miles, but soon it will be so cold and then I'll probably get frostbite and all my fingers will fall off and I'll lose my job because I can no longer type or work on a computer. This can't be happening. I am going through my mind and listing all of our extra crap on craiglist. Anyone want to buy a treadmill?
And I'm emotionally drained about this half marathon on Saturday. I'm literally scared sick. If it were relatively flat, I know I could do it but reading about the "steep ascents" and treacherous steep declines...for 13 miles??? I'm just more embarrassed that it will be like 7 hours later and everyone is waiting for that one pale red-head to finish the race already. I even checked online to see if I could get my money back. Sadly, it is not refundable. And I've told everyone I'm doing it so I guess I have to follow through.
Oh yeah, and the cats are becoming bothersome. I love them, but Matt is allergic. And Lola eats plastic and then vomits on our new carpet and one of them (we have yet to catch the culprit) has decided he/she doesn't need to use the litter box on occasion. So the combination of all of these means we are getting rid of them. It gives me great sadness to think of them going to live somewhere else. They're our babies! It's really just been a rough couple of days.
Fortunately, Matt and I got to go out for dinner Friday night and we sang karaoke!! We were horrible and obviously not drunk enough (or at all) to even pretend like we did a good job, but it was fun to go out. And Matt was able to buy a motor from someone for $500 and someone from church is going to help him replace the motor AND they are loaning us their truck until then. I cried again...what a kind gesture! And I'm grateful that Matt is able to do these kind of things. Makes me want to listen to "Silver Lining" by Rilo Kiley.

Happy Birthday to Momma Salt

Both my mother and my father's mother have celebrated birthdays recently and I am feeling very grateful for the both of them. Particularly I am feeling nastalgic today after reading The Secret Life of Bees. The book is about a girl whose only memory of her mother is the unfortunate day where, as a toddler, she accidently shot and killed her mother. Her father is unkind to her and one day informs her that the day she killed her mother, her mother was packing her suitcase to leave her. Lily can't believe that her mother would leave her, so she runs away to find out more about this woman she can barely remember. I wanted to take a break and write about how I was feeling, as it has moved me to meditate on some feelings about my own mother and grandmother.

Lily meets a woman who nannied her mother, who tells Lily things about her mother that Lily has longed to know. What kind of sandwich was her favorite, what she liked to do, what her favorite color was, etc. I thought about the moments where I really got to know my own mother. How grateful I am that she taught my senior seminary class because it gave me the chance to really, truly learn from her. And learn things about her that I handn't previously known, like what her favorite scripture was (2 Kings 6:16-17). Elisha and his servant were surrounded by the Syrians (who wanted to kill them) at night while they slept. When the servant awoke he was afraid and woke up Elisha saying Alas what shall we do? Then Elisha tells him v. 16 "Fear not; for they that be with us are more than they that be with them." I am sure the servant found that hard to believe and was quaking in his boots because Elisha then prays v.17 "open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man and he saw: and behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."

And at the part in the book where one of the women Lily came to stay with passes on, I was reminded of my grandmother, my mother's mother. I remember her funeral and the emotions I felt that day. I remember writing down my memories of her and feeling sad that there weren't more. I then thought about all the moments I had with my own mother that I took for granted. All the times she and I drove an hour to the doctor with me and the hour back and wishing that I remembered each word, each detail of our conversation, wishing desparately that my life ran in syndication. Wishing all the times that instead of thinking, "You've told me this story before, Mom" that I had written it down in my heart and kept it close for moments like this.

I love you mom for all you have done for me, for all the times you held me up when I wanted to drown. Thank you for always being there for me. And in case you were wondering, my mom's favorite sandwich is "A turkey sandwich with cranberries on an everything bagel."

Our little prodigy

Today the sweet melodies of music have filled our home. First I volunteered to play my violin in the Stake music event next week. Let's just say that I'm a teeeeny bit rusty. Fortunately the music is fairly easy and the ladies were all very patient with me (helping me tune my hopelessly out of tune instrument). A quick shout-out to Erika and to Marianne for helping me and not mocking me mercilessly as they very will could have. And then there is Ally...totally showing me in all things musical.

I made out a "here go" and a "what's that?" $50 bucks if you can decipher anything else.

Reasons Why I'm Awesome

Well for starters, I'm on the cover of the BYU graduate school catalog. That's right, 3 years after graduation and I'm still rocking their world. OK, that's all I got for now, but check it out:

And no, that was not photoshopped. Here's the official link to prove it:

Lazy Weekend

Conference weekend means I don't do much. In fact, I didn't get out of my jammies today, and I would have done the same yesterday except we had running group (which by the way was really fun. We ran in Blue Mounds and climbed up the observation tower. I don't think I ever came away from running saying "that was fun!" Usually it's more, "I can't believe I just did that.")
Friday night we did have people over to watch the BYU game against Utah State. Ally and Kendall found all the shoes.

The great thing about having lots of kids over for the evening is that I finally convinced Matt to take down the baby gate. I told him I was NOT going to spend all night long going to let kids up or down. Ally can do stairs, she does them just fine at other people's houses, and she does them just fine at our house. He told me he was afraid that she might fall and if she fell he would blame me and he didn't want to blame me. I understand the sentiment, but still, it's time!! Are we going to wait until she's 7 to let her try stairs? And besides, she WILL fall. We all have and I still do, so if she has the grace of her mother she will fall ALOT).
Another thing we've all done that Ally has taken to doing alot of is coloring on herself, on the table, on the wall, pretty much whereover she can. She even drew on our coffee table with permanent marker. Sigh.

But, good news...I can finally get her hair into pigtails. Isn't she cute? Course I have to turn something on the TV in order for her to let me even touch her hair.
